Yes, there was some snow which was mild entertainment to see just how excited a small child can get when chucked into a giant freezer compartment. It literally lasts 10 minutes before they’re crying out to be let back in because the ice is hurting or some other nonsense. I managed another 5 minutes before the neighbour gave me a stern look as I stood and laughed at the boy as he struggled with a locked front door. Then I went and gave them a piece of my mind about how I could live my life however I want now that everybody has voted to be selfish gits forever.
I managed to get through my epic Star Trek marathon and I’m quite pleased with my mental stamina over that. I believe that’s approx. 730 episodes although I have to confess that I dropped the animated series once I discovered it wasn’t really cannon and I had a genuine excuse to stop it streaming any further than necessary. Here is my brief review of what I’ve encountered:
The Original Series – Brilliant! Holds out very well considering its age but it has been all nicely remastered with effects and shizzle. Some really great stories in there…particularly Balance of Terror, Amok Time, City on the Edge of Forever.
The Next Generation – struggled quite a bit for the first three series and then it managed to sort itself into a decent groove. I think Sir Patrick helped it immensely as only really him and Brent Spiner keep it watchable.
Deep Space Nine – Overlong and padded with boring episodes…also fails to find its way until the fourth season. However, the political satire was top notch.
Voyager – The hardest to get through. I think if they’d kept with the notion of life on board getting harder as the series wore on (rather than just exploring that a bit and then popping back to the norm) then it would have been a lot better. Another one that failed to find its way till the third season and then realised that the cyborg and the hologram were the best characters. Not great.
Discovery – Hard to get a handle on at first and difficult to judge as there is at least one more series to come. However, some great moments and effects and Jason Isaacs. There should be more Jason Isaacs in everything.
Enterprise – The series I was looking forward to the least and the one I actually enjoyed the second most. I think it was one season too short (viewing figures fault) but was chugging along nicely by season two and firing on all photons (sorry) by season four.
So… that’s done and now I can turn my attention towards more creatively rewarding pressures like proofing Mythomania, rewriting Seething Fury and drafting Kerry San Dever. Which will be fun for me…less fun for you as you still haven’t read any of them.
I’ve had a bit of a breakthrough with Kerry San Dever – ie how to start the bloody thing. I also think this will be the last book I do…so in effect a nice trilogy of stories that are hopefully all a bit different but cosmically linked. Anyway, that won’t be till the back end of 2018 before I start proper. I think I said that about 2017 before but you can’t rush this shit.
Mythomania has been proofed but will need some editing and rewriting so may see the light of day later this year. I don’t really know. Hope so…but I want it to be properly done. Also need to sort out the cover as it’s not really what I hoped for.
Aside from that…more music? Who knows. I’m doing a little bit of ‘jaaammmming’ with an old band mate but it may not amount to much more than that. I have thoughts in my head of electronic soundtracks but that involves time, effort and planning and that’s all such a struggle really.
Still – I promise to keep you posted more for my own sanity than anything else.
